The DocuPunch MINI frequently asked questions, featuring Bob Cooke, the James Burn automatic punching and binding expert.

Q) How do you set up the machine?
A) Put your stack of paper onto the feed tray, locate your pins on the back and on the side, that will set your side joggers for you. Jog a sheet in, fine-tune it as needed, bring it through, and check the punching.

Q) Will it handle index tabs and mixed paper stocks?
A) Yes you can. You would set it up the same way. Since there are three pushers on here, it will push on the shoulders of the index tabs, and also the paper that is in between the index tabs. This way there is no problem doing index tabs on this machine at all. Mixed stock is not a problem because of the separator beak (like on all of our other automatic punches) and that separator beak allows the stock to run without puncturing thicker materials.

Q) Will it keep my sheets collated?
A) It pulls off the top of the stack, so what is up above goes around a turnover drum and gets flipped over. So what was on the top is now on the bottom.

Q) How do I change the die to punch a different pattern?
A) It is very easy to change the die. All you do is hit the “die down” button, turn this handle, and slide the die right out.

Q) Where are the chip tray and reception bin located?
A) The chip tray for the machine is easy, it just slides right out. It has a sensor to tell you when it gets full; it will flash on the screen that the chip bin is full. Your reception tray is right down here. Your paper comes into that and it just slides out so you can remove the paper. When you slide it back in, there are magnets that hold it in place.

Q) Does it have die storage on the unit?
A) Yes there is. Right down below the feeding unit there is an area where you can store your extra dies.

Q) Is the stand included with the machine?
A) No, the stand is an option. You can put this on a table (note: it weighs about 370 lbs. and the table must allow for this capacity), but a lot of people choose the stand because it is on wheels and makes the machine mobile so that you can move it around. You can use the machine where your operators are binding books. So if you have your wire department here, and your coil over here, they can just roll the machine back and forth depending on what sort of mechanical binding they need to do.

Q) When should I consider investing in automatic punching and binding machines?
A) Really, once you get to probably trying to hand punch 65,000 sheets a month (50 to 65,000…in that area), you really want to try to look at going into an automatic punch. Depending on your production needs, we would recommend the proper machine for what you are doing.

Frequent Asked Questions

Q
Are the punching pins removable?
Asked by Customer
A

Yes, each individual pin in the die is easily removed without the need for any special tools. There is a spot on the die where you can store 1 removed pin. They are easy to re-install as well. Removing a pin or two will help you center your sheets, especially when doing the more unique paper sizes.

Answer by Binding101
Q
What kind of stand do I need to place it on?
Asked by Customer
A

The MINI weighs about 370 lbs, so you need to make sure that any table you use can handle this capacity. There is an option to add the official DocuPunch® MINI stand which has locking rolling castors for mobility, and takes up no extra floor space, lending to the compactness benefit of this punch.
