The popular Akiles MegaBind-1E Electric Plastic Comb Binding Machine is foot pedal operated for the punching and manually operated for the binding steps. This model punches through a capcity of 20 sheets of 20lb. paper. It will punch documents up to 14" long, and will bind all sizes of plastic combs from 3/16" to 2". Fully disengageable pins allow punching of both standard and unusual sheet sizes eliminating any partial holes punched on the top or bottom. The MegaBind 1E is a rugged machine, constructed of all metal. Akiles has made it simple to produce a professionally bound book in-house. Several features ensure the perfect outcome each time. A Side Margin Control provides an evenly centered bind. A Punching Margin Control allows the operator to select the optimal margin depth for every specific book size. A Binding Guide is built in to assist the operator in selecting the correct comb size for each different book. Finally, the Continuous Binding Control knob sets how far the comb opener will spread. This is especially useful if binding the same size documents so you do not have to adjust each bind.
A manual version of this machine, the Akiles MegaBind 1 is available to purchase for lower volume needs.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The MegaBind-1E from Akiles and Binding101 is the ultimate mid-level plastic comb binding machine offering electronic capabilities, strong features, and simple operation all at a great price point, offering exceptional value. This combination makes it an ideal unit for businesses with frequent binding needs, but perhaps not daily in too-large of quantities. Schools, law firms, and engineering firms are just a few of the popular users. If you need something more powerful, consider the C800 Pro, or if you need something a little less robust, consider the CombMac-EX instead.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
I will start off with the price. It may seem a bit odd to say I like the price when this machine lists for around one thousand dollars, but for the strength and features available, you would have to spend nearly twice as much to get something similar with just a slightly stronger motor. The electric foot pedal is always great, leaving your users’ hands free to work with documents, and making a pretty notable improvement on speed. Plus, the ease of operation that is achieved with the electric functionality is something your staff will thank you for; anyone who has ever made comb bound books with a manual machine can attest to the monotony and strain of using a handle to punch sheets instead.
If you have read any of my other reviews, then you already know how much I love the disengageable pin feature. I think this should be standard for all machines, but as it is not yet, it is a big perk to have when you find a unit that includes them. These pins are simply pulled slightly out to disengage that specific hole from punching, which makes working with custom sheet sizes much easier. The MegaBind 1E also has an open-ended punch, which means you can actually make books that double the 14 inch length, along for books up to 28 inches by just flipping your stack and punching a second time.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
The electric Megabind is an overall well-rounded machine, with very few limitations to keep in mind. One of the things that customers comment on is the aesthetics, and I tend to agree; this machine definitely falls into the classic look category. But that’s just the outside; the inner workings of this system are comparable to others that are more expensive. Another consideration may be the page capacity of 20 sheets. This is a nice number to use as a maximum, but just keep in mind that you should never run a machine at “full capacity” all the time. For example, just because your car can achieve speeds up to 220 miles per hour does not mean that you should drive it that fast all the time. The same holds true for document binding machines; the maximum capacity is just that, the max…not the everyday recommendation.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
The MegaBind-1E sits into a great price point for an electric comb binder, offering a hassle-free foot pedal punching action, with customizable punching pattern/disengageable pins. The medium-heavy duty capabilities are impressive considering that it is nearly half the price of the next level machine. Though it may not look that pretty on the outside, it offers strong bones with all of the essentials needed to make a professional comb bound book without any overkill.
