The ClipsShop CSTEP-2 grommet press machine is one of our most popular sellers because of the economical price and the advanced grommeting design. It is a desktop grommet press that is designed to handle low and mid-volume requirements using grommet sizes from as small as #XX00 1/8" up to as large as #5.5 11/16". All of those sizes of grommets are self-piercing, which means that when paired with their corresponding grommet dies, you can cut a hole and set your grommet in just one step to go through most materials. To switch between sizes, the die change-over is fast and simple. The CSTEP-2 has a unique handle shape that reduces the force required to set a grommet, even through some tougher materials, while the soft grip handle keeps you comfortable. It features a longer set depth than other similar machines, allowing you to place grommets up to 4 ¼" deep into your materials. An optional GrommetSniper™ alignment tool features an extended ruler that helps when adding multiple grommets onto one item.
The ClipsShop CSTEP-2 grommet press was designed to be competitive with the Stimpson 405 grommet press, offering even more capabilities at a lower price point. This makes it a great solution for small offices and shops that needs to provide professionally grommeted items, such as vinyl signs, on-demand in small quantities. It will provide years of professional and trouble-free performance that is easy to maintain and work with.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The CSTEP-2 is a small table-top grommet press machine that is a good choice for anyone who grommets low-volumes (I would say a few per day, maximum) and only standard materials, such as banner vinyl. I also only recommend it for applications where the end look is not super important, and for users who need to use small to medium sized grommets, not the large grommets. If you want to be able to grommet more of a variety of materials or a higher volume, check out the CSTON-1 Grommet Press, which has a spring-loaded handle and adjustable set strengths. If you need a table press that will handle the full range of grommet sizes, then check out the CSPUR-1, or if you need an industrial machine for high-volume grommeting, then consider the CSPIC-2 Pneumatic Grommet Press.
WHAT I LIKE:
I like that this press is so fairly priced… it is a direct comparison to the popular Stimpson 405 press, but is less expensive both upfront, and in the consumables (the dies and grommets). It can even grommet up to a #5.5, whereas that Stimpson press only handles up to a #3 grommet, which gives you a maximum hole size (after setting) of 11/16”. It also has a heavy feel to it, which provides a sturdy base keeping it in-place while in use. The blue metal look is also a nice touch, and the handle has padding, which is comfortable.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
This is a very basic hand press, so it works well with standard vinyl materials, such as banners or thin paper books for filing, but not much else. Because it is not adjustable and can only press to one depth, the grommets may not set completely if you are using a thinner material, which means it could end up loose and spin around on the material… they won’t necessarily fall out, but they may not have as tight of a “squeeze”, so the grommet itself could twist around. This may not be acceptable for some applications, but may be OK for items that won’t be viewed at closely, such as hanging banners. Since the hand press also does not have a spring-loaded handle (like the CSTON-1 does), it takes quite a bit of force from you (the operator) to press the grommet through the material. This means the end result of the set grommet is dependent on the force you exert on the handle. This can become tiresome after a couple grommets, depending on how difficult the material is to work with. Paper booklets and fabrics, for example, do not work too well with the CSTEP press. This hand press can handle only up to a #5.5 grommet, also known as an 11/16” grommet. Though this does allow for the most popular sizes (even as small as #XX00 1/8”) and is still more capacity than the comparable Stimpson 405 press, it does limit you from using anything larger than a #5.5 grommet, which excludes the #12 that are most commonly used for curtains.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
At the end of it all, if you need to get simple grommeting done in basic vinyl banner materials, do not need to grommet large sizes, and are only setting grommets in very low volume runs, then the CSTEP-2 may be a good choice for you. It is very easy to use so doesn’t need any training, and will get your simple jobs done quickly. If you need to do a variety of materials (like our cool grommet crafts), I do not recommend this machine.
