WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
Of course, the thing that I like most about this machine is its ability to punch and bind for both twin-loop wire-o and gbc plastic binding combs. For the price, this kind of functionality cannot be found in any other machine, proving that, once again, Akiles sees an unserved niche, and fills it.
In addition to the versatility and price combination, the DuoMac is a durable, strong machine that is built with great quality parts. It can fairly easily punch through between 15 to 20 sheets of paper at a time, and features punching pins that are all disengageable. If you have read any of my other reviews, than you know how much I value that feature and the major benefit it offers.
The Akiles C31 DuoMac is an incredibly function-rich binder machine, boasting features that let you achieve far more than the average competitive system.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
The primary consideration to think about is the fact that the wire portion of the DuoMac is a 3:1 pitch (hence the name “C31”; C for comb and 31 for 3:1 pitch). This means that you are limited to only 3:1 pitch diameter wires, which include the smaller sizes from 1/4 inch to 9/16 inch only. To bind thicker books with this machine, you would only be able to do so with the comb portion.
With all the functionality, the system becomes a bit larger than traditional binding machines; this may impact users who don’t have much counter space. The depth has the most notable extra girth, with the comb opener sitting on the top rear of the machine.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Don’t let the many handles and pins dissuade you -- the DuoMac is an awesome machine, bringing the functionality of two machines into one.
