DuoMac 421 Expert Review

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The Akiles DuoMac C41ECI is the perfect multi-functional coil and comb machine for medium sized offices with mid-level document binding needs. It offers a combination of electric and manual features for convenience and cost-saving benefits. And because it can punch and bind for both plastic coil and plastic comb, it saves space and prevents the need for investing in a secondary machine.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
The DuoMac C41ECI in unique in its ability to punch for both plastic comb and plastic coil. These two binding styles require different punching patterns (4:1 for coil, 19-hole for comb), so having them combined into one unit is incredibly cost-effective, space saving, and innovative. This expands your versatility without requiring investment into multiple machines. This is yet another accomplishment for Akiles, meeting the needs of their office0level clients without breaking the bank. And, as per usual with Akiles-manufactured machines, the DuoMac C41ECI is “beefier” than other brands, packing a pretty powerful 20 page maximum punching capacity on both punching throats. The integrated comb opener and electric inserter make binding/finishing your books quick and simple, accomplished from the same fairly small system. If you choose, the 19-hole comb punch pattern also works with specialty spiral-o wires, but in order to use those you will need to invest in a separate wire closer for finishing.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Probably the most important consideration here is the size of the machine. When you keep in mind that it can accomplish the various binding styles all-in-one, it does make up for that, but it may still be too large and heavy for everyone, weighing about 65 lbs. Something else to consider is that, even though it does feature a convenient electric roller inserter for your coils, the rollers are not mobile; this means they work best for smaller and medium sized coils, and may still cause some fumbling with extra large coils.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Sure, the DuoMac C41ECI won’t win any awards for design or beauty, but it packs a powerful punch for the price point, and is incredibly versatile, creating great value for its users. If you are a medium volume user –someone who might bind several books a day, but not all-day long— who wants to make wire and coil books, then the DuoMac 421 is a great choice. It is priced fairly, and creates value for the users and their clients.
