In this video, we’ll look at the Onyx 4000 Plus; a 12” open--ended interchangeable die punch by Rhin-O-Tuff.

The Onyx OD 4000 Plus features Rhin-O-Tuff’s interchangeable die system. It allows the punching of a wide range of different hole patterns for different binding needs based on the dies that you chose to purchase.

Installation of the dies is easy -- Simply remove the two screws on the front of the machine to slide out the die. Slide in a new die until flush with the machine and lock it in with the die locking screws.

All of the pins are dis-engagable in every punch die, enabling you to fine tune the punch for different project sizes. Simply remove this top bar and slide out any pin that you’d like. The entire die is labeled, so selection of the right pin is very easy. Now, replace the carriage, slide the die back into the machine and lock it into place.

The margin stop is solid and provides consistency throughout all your projects and the markings on the die as well as the machine itself help you measure the exact position of the margin setting that you need.

The Onyx OD four thousand Plus also comes standard with a foot pedal, making hands free punching possible.

The Onyx four thousand Plus can punch up to 20 sheets of 20 pound paper in a single lift depending on the die you chose. All the Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx punches have a patented auto-reverse feature and an overload detection feature that triggers an auto-reversing function of the pins to reduce jamming in the punch; making this punch very efficient.

Lastly, the Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx series includes numerous optional module units designed for the binding process. For efficiency of space, the OD 4000 plus is large enough to have many of these modules sit on or bolt on to the top of the unit.

I recommend the Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX 4000PLUS for larger offices, or small print and copy shops. It is a durable, quality punching machine with the capability to punch popular patterns for wire, comb, coil, 3-hole ring binders, calendar making, and more. It is a smaller punching machine than many of the other Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX machines, making it ideal for businesses with less space available. WHAT I LIKE:
As is true for all of the Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX machines manufactured by Performance Design LLC, the 4000PLUS features the same impressive 3 year warranty. There are no other machines in this class with a warranty this long; in fact, the majority of them range from just 90 days to 1 year… this 3 year warranty proves just how reliable this machine is.
 
As mentioned briefly above, the 4000 PLUS binding punch has the ability to punch popular hole patterns for Wire-O®, spiral binding plastic coil, plastic comb, 3-hole ring binders, and much more with just a simple die change. When I say simple die change, I mean it; all you have to do is pull a lever, slide out the die, slide in a new die, and press the lever back into place. There is no unscrewing or hassling with small parts that could get lost. This also makes the process very fast; you can change the die in just a few seconds, which makes change-over between customer jobs seamless.
 
Punching for multiple types of binding means you don’t have to buy multiple binding machines to meet the needs of many customers. So not only do you save money, you also save a ton of table space, which as all shop owners know, is very valuable. And of course, I love the sleek black finish; it looks expensive and new, especially when compared with the gray and tan machines made by other manufacturers.
 
And it is an ONYX machine, so it has been upgraded with “quietized dies”, making it significantly less noisy that its predecessors. Watch this short comparison video to hear the difference.
 

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
The ONYX 4000PLUS is on the smaller-side of the heavy duty punching line, and only has an 11” long punch opening. This makes it ideal for letter size paper, but not for larger sheets, such as legal. It can, however, still work with sheets up to double the punching width (22”) with a second punch; punch your stack once, flip the stack over and align it so the holes are matched up evenly, then punch again. It also has a thinner punching capacity than the other Rhin-O-Tuff® machines, rated at about 20 sheets of paper at a time (other machines range from 30 to 55 sheets – shop a variety of other heavy duty punch machines here).
 
Before you buy, you should also note that this machine is a punch machine and will not actually bind the wires, coils, or combs. For that, you can consider adding a binding module of your choice. If you buy a Rhin-O-Tuff® module, then you have the option to mount it to the 4000PLUS, or you can work with it side-by-side so multiple employees can work on jobs. The Rhin-O-Tuff® options include the HD4170 electric coil inserting machine, the HD8000 manual wire closer, or the HD4470 plastic comb spreader.
 

THE BOTTOM LINE: 
The Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX 4000PLUS makes a great machine for small to medium print shops that primarily work with letter size documents, need the versatility to be able to punch for multiple binding methods, and have limited space available. It offers good value for the price, and is a high-quality puncher that is backed by a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty.
