I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The EZ Coil 46 is manufactured for lower-volume spiral coil binding needs, such as individuals and small businesses that only need to bind on-occasion, and not in large batches.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
The EZ Coil 46 is priced for low-volume, but that doesn’t mean it is without awesome features! Probably my favorite features on this small coil binder is that the holes are actually slightly oval instead o the traditional round; this makes a significant difference when it comes to coil inserting. If you can picture the fact that a coil is rounded, you can imagine that an oval hole would allow for more room when inserting that rounded coil, so there is less catching and fumbling with frustrating coils. It also has an incorporated electric inserter, which is not common for a machine in this price range. This plastic roller can help assist inserting through the center portion of your book to make the process faster. And, if you have read any of my other reviews, you know just how important disengageable punching pins are! So I am excited to share that the EZ Coil 46 from Tamerica and Binding101 has completely disengageable pins from end-to-end. Again, this feature is rare in a machine in this price range. It really opens up the possibilities of document sizes while keeping the punch pattern professional.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Although this machine does have an electrical inserting roller, it is made of plastic and has divots intended for the coils. This material and setup doesn’t work as well as other systems that have solid rubber rollers, so sometimes it can be more work to use the roller than to just insert by-hand. In addition, Tamerica states a 15-sheet punching capacity, but I recommend keeping that down closer to 10 or so. This, of course, depends highly on the paper stock you are using, but even with a standard 20# bond copy paper that was used to determine that rating, it can be a bit of a struggle (and strain the machine), so fewer pages are recommended.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
For the price point, the EX Coil 46 has a lot of outstanding features that are found almost exclusively on much more expensive models. This brings those convenient features to lower volume users for a faster and easier document binding solution. Though it is not as powerful as some users may prefer, the essentials for professional finishing are all there, expanding accessibility.
