Description
The Akiles CoilMac-EX Plus is a new and innovative electric spiral binding machine that makes medium-duty coil binding fast and easy. This cost-effective electric binder offers the convenience of electric punching and electric coil inserting, without the high price point of the more production-driven machines. It is built with all the same high-quality and durable parts as the other Akiles machines, but feature a smaller motor that reduces the cost greatly. It is the perfect solution for medium workloads who may bind daily, but not consistently throughout the day**. This "plus" machine features 100% disengageable punch pins that give you complete control over which holes punch and which do not. This feature is important for users who do multiple sheet sizes, as they can stop specific holes from activating, preventing the accidental partial-hole that may occur without this feature. The "plus" model also has oval holes, which makes inserting the spiral coils much easier.
Features:
- Electric punching, activated by a foot pedal, leaves both of your hands free to handle the documents and can punch through up to 25 sheets* of paper at a time
- Electric coil inserting, activated by an on/off push button, with full-length 11-3/8" rollers for high-friction and durability
- Standard 4:1 pitch with perfected 0.248" between the holes for perfect spacing and easy inserting
- Open punching throat with alignment peg allows for punching sheets up to double the length, taking your maximum sheet length from 13" to 26" by just flipping your book, placing the peg into the last hole to align it properly, and punching your sheets a second time
- U-channel on front of machine shapes your book spine to an ideal curve, making coil inserting easier
- Adjustable side margin control lets you perfectly center your pages
- Punching margin control lets you choose how deep into the book you want your holes set
- Large waste drawer, so you can empty it less frequently
- All-metal construction and quality parts make this machine very durable
* Based on 20# bond copy paper. May vary depending on what paper stock is used. It is not recommended to punch the full capacity 100% of the time (this is true for all punching machines).
** The CoilMac-EX is built with quality parts, but is not meant to run all day and needs to "rest" after every 3 hours of use to prevent overheating.
*** For coil sizes larger than 1", we recommend an electric inserter that has and adjustable roller, such as the Finish-@-Coil E1. The stand-still roller on this machine will insert all coil sizes, however, it gets more difficult with larger coils.
* Approximation based on standard 20 lb. bond copy paper. May vary depending on paper stock.

CoilMac EX Series Binding Machine Overview & Comparison
Let's find a project. First you have your front and back covers and your documents. Use a sample sheet of paper to align the side margin and disengage the end die to avoid a partial hole at the end of the paper. Punch the covers first, then punch your paper. To insert your coil, switch to roller operation. Manually insert the first few holes then let the inserter do the rest. Use the coil crimper to crimp the ends. You now have a perfect coil bound book. The Akiles CoilMac-EX comes with a one year warranty. In case your machine needs repair, we'll take care of parts and labor. With style, strength and function, the Akiles CoilMac-EX is the ideal all in one solution for your next coil binding project.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The CoilMac-EX+ is a new Akiles machine that is a great option for medium-duty book binding in offices that may bind several times daily, but not throughout the entire day. If you are doing lighter workloads than this, such as only once a day or even more infrequently, consider the Akiles CoilMac-ER. Or if you need something more heavy duty for bigger workloads, check out the fully electric CoilMac EPI.
WHAT I LIKE:
Akiles Products, Inc. does a great job of offering a variety of binding machines to meet many different customers’ needs, which means their machines can be very targeted for specific people, eliminating features not needed which helps keep the pricing down and the quality up. The new CoilMac-EX is an example of their goal to meet these niche market requirements, as it features all of the same high-quality parts and components, with only a smaller motor – this gives you the electric punching capabilities and electric inserting without the high price point. It is meant for offices that want these features, but that won’t be binding constantly throughout an entire day. I like that it includes “plus” machine features, the most valuable being those oval holes that make spiral binding insertion so so much easier, especially for those thick books. The coil inserting roller function also prevents the irritating need to spin in those coils hole-by-hole using just your hands, and makes the process fast. Foot pedal activation of the punching is always a favorite feature of mine (as simple as it may be) because it means I can have my hands on my book the entire time, giving me really good control. As opposed to machines that are activated with a button, requiring you to prep your book for punching, then let go of the book to turn on the puncher… and if you have ever bound a book of any kind, you know that all it takes is a tiny bump to misalign those pages. Although not important to the functionality of the machine, the fact that the CoilmacEX is black in color to match office equipment is a huge plus, in my opinion… it keeps it looking new and clean over the more industrial looking gray/tan machines.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Just because the Coilmac EX is an electric punch and bind coil binder, does not mean it is a high-production machine that can run all day. This was manufactured to offer the convenience of electric benefits to customers with smaller or medium-sized workloads… those who might bind several times a day, but not all day (tip: you should let the machine cool-down after every 2-3 hours of use). You should also note that the roller inserter is a single-roller, so it is not as precise as the options that feature two rollers (especially compared to two-roller inserting machines that have one adjustable roller, such as the Akiles Finish-@-Coil E1).
THE BOTTOM LINE:
At the end of it all, I feel the CoilMac EX is a great option for those medium-duty office users that make presentations for clients and meetings regularly, but not as often as “all-day-erry-day”. The combination of electric functionality, an attractive look and small motor make it the perfect office binding machine for coil books of all sizes.
