Description
With the most complete system of functions and a built-in electric coil inserting machine, the Akiles CoilMac-ECI Plus is in a class all to itself. The CoilMac-ECI Plus makes Spiral Binding fast & easy, and that's why Binding101 has dubbed it as the ideal partner for mid-volume workloads.
The CoilMac ECI Plus features die disengagement pins that allow for a clean punch with multiple paper sizes. This feature is ideal for those who will be punching any sheet size other than letter, as it allows you to control how many holes you page has, giving you the capability to eliminate half of a hole punch on the end of your sheet. The punching margin control provides the correct punch-margin-depth for each spiral binding coil size while maximizing the document's tear resistance. The deeper set the holes are, the stronger the bind will be. The open punching throat and continuous punching guide allow for an easy alignment and punching of documents larger that 13". The electric spiral binding coil inserter is foot pedal operated, allowing the free use of both hands and granting the operator complete rotating control of the roller. This drastically reduces time and costs by making the inserting surprisingly fast and easy. The Coilmac ECI Plus includes a Spiral Binding Diameter Guide as well as a pair of our Cutter Crimper Pliers, making this unit a full finishing solution.
The Coilmac ECI Plus punches oval holes in a true 4:1 pitch, making Spiral Binding 50% faster & much easier! The CoilMac ECI Plus features 4mm x 5mm oval holes that make the coil insertion process easier & faster than ever before. Because a Plastic Spiral Binding Coil is a continuous spiral, the oval holes provide a clear path for the coil as it is inserted into the book. No more struggling over coil that is caught on a sheet in your book! The Akiles "Plus" machines are the first & only pieces of equipment in their class to offer this advanced feature. Scroll down below the specifications for a real-life diagram of the hole patterns. Another difference between the CoilMac ECI and the CoilMac ECI+ is the revolutionary 4:1 pitch with .248" hole spacing that is specifically designed to give you 44 evenly-centered holes in an 11" sheet, providing the most ideal hole to edge-of-sheet margins and easier coil insertion. This hole pattern is 100% compatible with the standard 4:1 pitch coils.
* Based on 20# bond copy paper. May vary depending on paper stock used.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The CoilMac ECI+ (plus) is a great option for offices with medium to semi-heavy workloads; someone looking for the convenience of the electric inserting, but who doesn’t need the electric punching. It may also be good option for a new small print shop to get them through the start-up workloads until their needs increase. This ECI plus model has fully disengageable pins oval holes, so works great for anyone who will do different sheet sizes and thick books with large coils.
If you fit into this category of users, but don’t need the added perk of the oval holes and fully disengageable pins, then you may want to downgrade to the CoilMac ECI standard version. However, if you are doing heavier workloads than this, consider the CoilMac EPI, which is also available in a plus model.
WHAT I LIKE:
First off, “plus” model spiral binding machines are always my first choice… the benefits of having those oval holes makes coil inserting for thicker books much easier than it normally is, and the 100% disengageable pins lets you do all different sheet sizes from 2” up to 13” (26” with the open punching throat). The attached coil inserter is nice because you don’t need to have a separate machine, or roll the coils in by hand to get the inserting done, which is normally super time consuming and tedious (the kind of tedious-ness that makes you tighten your fists up and scream under your breath). Akiles also backs a 1 year warranty, which is better than many other machines in this class that are only covered for 90 days, or sometimes even less.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
I am not a huge fan of the industrial look of binding machines like this, with the tan/gray coloring; but that really doesn’t play into the great quality at all, just an aesthetic preference on my part (I prefer machines that fit with my office decor… even if my office is not so pretty now, I dream of office décor like the gorgeous stuff on our Pinterest page). You should also note that the ECI+ is not an all-in-one machine, so to finish your coils you need to use the coil crimper pliers (included for free – another perk!), or invest into a separate electric crimping machine, such as the Finish-@-Coil E1.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Aside from my personal aesthetic preference, this is an overall wonderful spiral binding machine! It is built with really high quality parts, and will last for years with proper use. It has a great combination of manual and electric features for medium volume workloads. And if you decide the “plus” features are not needed, then keep in mind that the CoilMac ECI is available in two versions, so you could get the same, durable machine at a slightly lower price by choosing the CoilMac ECI “standard” version instead. The overall performance of the CoilMac ECI Plus will outshine so many other brands in regards to durability, and the 1 year warranty backs that claim up.
