I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
The AlphaCoil-E is the perfect electric coil binding system for medium-duty spiral binding of thinner documents. It is an all-in-one solution, meaning that it will punch and insert electrically, and includes crimping pliers to manually finish the ends.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
Finding an electric punch and insert system in this price range can be a struggle. Usually models will be made of flimsy materials, or brands that are not known for their quality of machine. With the AlphaCoil-E, however, you can buy with confidence in the fact that Akiles is a top-quality equipment manufacturer who stands behind their machines with a solid 1 year warranty. For the price, you will be pleasantly surprised at the capabilities; in fact, the 20 sheet maximum punch capacity is something extra impressive for the size of the system.
The AlphaCoil electric punch and bind machine is small and compact, and if I can be a little vain for a moment, looks way better than most other bind machines; almost like a printer with the square shape and the fact that it is devoid of handles. The front cover also closes when not in use, which makes it even smaller and protects the inner mechanisms from excess dust.
The AlphaCoil offers two activation options to choose from, so your user can use whichever they prefer; a foot pedal (which leaves both hands free to handle documents, increasing efficiency), or a push button. Every single one of the 46 punching pins can be disengaged, which makes it great for users who might want to work with various page sizes, not just basic letter size 8.5x11. We’ve found customers enjoy using them for top-binding on the 8.5” edge, as well as for half-size mini sheets and notepads. Another little note that I enjoy is the hook for the crimper pliers on the side of the machine; I have a tendency to set something down and then forget where I put it, so this ensures that everything you need to bind is always in one place.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
At the beginning of this review I mentioned “for binding of thinner documents”. The reason I specified thinner is because of the single-roller inserter. On machines built more appropriately for thick books that use large coils, there would dual rollers so that they can grip and spin the large spirals better. For this system, the single roller can truly increase speed of inserting, but will not work as well for thicker books. So I would recommend this machine for coils up to a maximum of 1” or 30mm. It may work alright for larger books, but it won’t be as smooth or simple, so it might actually be better to just manually insert the coils at that point. This machine also has a closed binding edge, which just means that you are strictly limited to a maximum page width of about 11” (or A4 paper).
THE BOTTOM LINE:
For mid-level spiral coil binding, with the convenience of electric punching and coil inserting of thin documents, the AlphaCoil-E is a great option. The small footprint means it won’t take up much space, and the convenient foot pedal or push button option leaves the decision on how to punch up to your individual operators. It is a strong coil binding system that offers all of the essentials for general office binding needs.
