Description

The James Burn DocuPunch PLUS has been upgraded and is now known as the fastest, easiest, and most reliable mid-volume book binding punch in its class. It is a part of the latest generation of James Burn automatic punching equipment and is as easy to use as any regular office copy machine or printer. The control panel is a touch screen LCD that quickly and simply walks you through setup, allowing you to calibrate the machine for your specific job in less than one minute. And the DocuPunch die- changing process is even faster, taking just seconds to switch from Wire-O, to plastic coil, to plastic comb, and so on. This simple working process means that your operators don’t need any special training, so you can place the machine and begin working very quickly.

The DocuPunch PLUS is also on rolling and locking castors, which allows for smooth and easy mobility of the machine; this means you are not tied down to one strict location for the machine, as you can move it to wherever your operators need to be at a certain point in time. It was designed for accurate medium-level automatic punching of books of all kinds, on-demand, directly from your copier or printer (including mixed stock from 16 lb. bond to 110 lb. index). Positive sheet pickup pulls from the top of the pile and a three-sided jogger prepares the pages for perfect registration and perfectly placed holes, every time. The punched sheets are kept in perfect pre-collated order, making the finished pages on the exit tray easy to handle and move to the binding stage. It will also punch index tabs that have a ¼” inset on the ends and are pre-collated into the finished sets.

Cycle speed is adjustable with three different settings, including 50, 60, and 75 cycles per minute, which amounts to approximately 76,500 sheets per hour at the fastest setting. This makes it the fastest binding punch in its class of similar machines. The slower settings are usually used for mixed page punching, index tab punching, and other more unique sheets. The adjustments mean you can choose the setting that suits your job perfectly and provides you with the best results. The pick thickness is adjustable from 0.4mm to 1mm, making for even more fine tuning, so you can produce maximum production output with trouble-free operation on various paper types. Even while the machine is in the middle of a job, you can make adjustments from the touch screen.

Maintenance of the DocuPunch+ is simple, as it will tell you when it is time to oil your die, sharpen your die, and when the extra-large chip bin is full and needs to be emptied. This removes the question of when and what preventative and general maintenance needs to be performed on the machine. The footprint is incredibly small for the power that this industrial binding punch packs; it will fit well into even the tightest space restrictions, and is easily moved as-needed on the heavy duty locking wheels.

Power on the machine. The machine can’t be operated without a punching die installed. If no tool is in the machine a notification will be listed, "check tool presence". Lower the feed tray using icon on the touch screen and load paper onto the feed table. On the front of the machine there is a recessed crank for the side guide hand wheel. Open the handle and turn to open or close the side guides. This adjusts the side guides on the feed tray, the joggers in the punching area, and the reception tray side guides. The guides in the paper path accommodate the paper width being run. Slide the paper stack in between the side guides and adjust to the paper width.

Push the “run” icon on the control panel and hold until the feed table begins to rise, and release. While the stack is rising, release the black locking handle and adjust the pile back stop assembly. The white pins should be snug against the back of the paper stock. Lock the black handle into position. The paper stack will move to its top position, and the pick mechanism on the machine will begin to cycle.

When the machine begins to cycle, hold down the “adjust” icon until the machine begins to cycle in the slow operation mode. The machine will pull one lift of paper into the punching area and stop. The side joggers and foot stops will move into position and stop so the operator can position each to the paper size being run. Using the hand wheel on the front of the machine, adjust the side joggers. Adjust the foot stops on the back side of the lift of paper. Loosen the locking black handle on the foot stops and slide them so they are touching the back side of the lift of paper, and lock the handle down. Push and hold the “run” icon on the control panel until the lift of paper has been punched and moves into the reception bin, and release button. Inspect the holes to verify they are centered on the paper.

There are two notches built into the die. These allow the die to be positioned into the machine so the holes are centered on the sheet of paper. If the holes are not centered, open the hinged panel on the side of the machine, pull the die latch out, and slide the die forward to the second notch position on the die.

With the back cover open, you have access to the finger pulls on the die that correspond to the sheet size being punched. Pull out the finger pulls to the correct sheet size being run, close the die-access panel over the reception tray, hit the “run icon” on the control panel to start the machine, allowing the machine to pull a lift of paper and run. Hit the “stop” icon and remove the lift of paper from the reception bin to verify correct alignment of the punched holes in the paper.

Once job is approved, hit the “run” icon to complete the job.

James Burn DocuPunch® PLUS FAQs with Bob Cooke

Transcript: Question: Will it work well with statically charged paper stocks?

Answer: Because the DocuPunch® PLUS feeds off of the top of the stack, you have less problems with static. When feeding off the bottom it can increase the amount of static, because you have the pressure of the paper on top of as you are drawing the paper across. But pulling from the top helps that problem. Plus, on the exit side we have an anti-static brush, so as the paper passes by, it pulls the static out of the paper.

Question: When would I use the different speed cycles?

Answer: This is the fastest machine cycle-wise of all machines in the same category, with the top speed of 75 cycles per minute. We have made it adjustable for different kinds of paper stocks, for instance if you are doing tabs collated in. For applications like this, you want to turn it down to the slower speeds. The same goes for if you have thick stocks, or mixed stock with covers like acetate.
______________________
Question: How do I setup the machine and perform change-overs?

Answer: There are two notches in the die, one is for even number of holes and one is for odd. Slide the die in and allow the lever to go into the correct notch for the size of paper you are doing. Pull the side handle out and turn it to adjust the paper guides on the entry pile, the side joggers, and the guide sin the reception. Then all you do is hit the button to bring one lift in. It will stop as it feeds into the die. Adjust your footstops to bring the paper up against the head stops. Cycle that through and it will come out in the reception. Take it out, fold your sheet in half, and make sure that the holes line up all the way across. Once your test sheet is approved, run the entire job.
______________________
Question: How do I change the die to punch a different pattern?

Answer: Push the tool change button right on the screen, open the back cover, pull the lever, and slide the die out by the handle.
______________________
Question: Can the dies and punch pins be sharpened?

Answer: Yes, dies can be sharpened with our Express Die Sharpening service. The screen will notify the operator when die sharpening is recommended (as well as when die lubrication is needed). It tracks the number of cycles for each die; all the operator has to do is indicate to the machine what die is inserted to keep track of the cycles.

The James Burn Lhermitte DocuPunch Plus Expert Review

WHAT I LIKE:
James Burn manufacturing is consistently known worldwide for its optimal and top-of-the-line punching machines . Despite its daunting exterior, this automated binding punch machine is quite simple to use. You only need to load your paper and choose the proper setting to operate the machine because all the required controls are located up front. The remainder will be handled by the device. Even in the event of a paper jam, an automatic stop feature will cause the device to turn off.

With the DocuPunch Plus, several different types of paper can be used. Copier paper, cardstock, perforated sheets, even cover stock can all be used with it. Paper as tiny as 5" x 5" and sheets as large as 13" x 12" can also be used with it. Pre-collated documents can also be simply punched using this automated binding punch machine. A paper jogger that will move your papers before they are punched is included with this device. This guarantees that the paper will be flat and that the hole will be placed precisely.

This automatic punching machine is extremely quick and can punch up to 30,000 pages per hour. It is perfect for usage in binderies or in-plant print facilities for medium-volume production. Depending on the fitted dies, this machine may perform a variety of punching patterns. For the following binding techniques, dies are available: plastic coil, double-o wire, velobind, plastic comb, and for use with loose-leaf binders (2-, 3-, and 4-ring).

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Priced above $30,000, this is a very pricey punch binding machine. Naturally, businesses with limited budget, minimal demand, or inadequate space won't invest in this unit, but print businesses and publishers shouldn't find the price to be prohibitive. especially in light of the operating costs that could be saved through the use of a system like this.

Also to take into consideration is that it’s only a punching device. You will need additional tools to bind your booklets after they have been punched because it won't bind your documents for you. The fact that the punching dies must be purchased individually is another drawback.

Given its size, the DocuPunch Plus will occupy a substantial amount of room. Smaller offices shouldn't use it. You must make sure this equipment will fit on the floor of your building or production area before placing an order.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
I recommend the James Burn Automatic DocuPunch Plus for large publishers and print shops who would greatly benefit from the output and size. If you’re a smaller sized company or copy shop, you can consider investing in the little brother, the PB3300 Modular Punch. Its desktop sized and capable of punching up to 25 sheets and binding up to 210 sheets at a time; It’s the perfect budget alternative.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
The James Burn Lhermite DocuPunch Plus is the ultimate mid-volume automated binding punch machine for precise, on-demand punching of coil, wire, comb, velo, and 3-hole binders. Documents that have already been printed and collated on your printer or copier will operate flawlessly. Despite being pricey and unable to bind your booklets, the James Burn Lhermite DocuPunch Plus is a wonderful machine because of its precision, speed, and ergonomic design. If you frequently need to punch a lot of paper, this would be a smart investment.

Frequent Asked Questions

Q
When would I use the slower cycle speed settings?
Asked by Customer
A

The slower cycle speed settings are ideal for when you are punching mixed sheets with different paper weights, as well as when punching tabs. The fastest speed setting of 75 cycles per minute means that the DocuPunch® is actually the fastest machine in its class. The ability to slow down the speed to 50 or 60 cycles for different paper stocks and job requirements makes it very versatile.

Answer by Binding101
Q
Can the DocuPunch® Dies be sharpened?
Asked by Customer
A

Yes! We offer an "express die sharpening service" that involves disassembling the die and sharpening not just the pins, but also the punch plate to ensure the best and longest-lasting results, re-assembling it, and mailing the die back to you. Click here to learn about the express die sharpening service and request sharpening of your DocuPunch® die today.

Answer by Binding101
Q
The paper stock I use has a lot of static charge...will the DocuPunch® work for me?
Asked by Customer
A

Because this machine has top-sheet feeding and an anti-static brush at the exit, it DOES have the ability to work well with even high-static sheets (such as acetate covers).
