Wire Binding

Wire-O binding is known by many names: double-loop, double-o, duo-wire, and also twin-loop binding. This method uses a continuous hinge of double wire loops to hold book covers and pages together. Graphic designers prefer this method because it offers a stylish metal finish in a variety of colors. This traditional method of wire binding secures pages so that they cannot be modified without unbinding the book. Books bound using the Wire-O method tend to lie flat, and sheets can turn 360°, which is ideal for calendars or notebooks. Pair with our Wire-O machines that range from low volume to full production floor models.

Wire Binding Pitch

Wire binding supplies come in two different pitches, or hole patterns, 3:1 or 2:1. The pitch refers to the number of holes per inch, and therefore it also refers to the number of loops on a wire spine. 3:1 (read as "three to one") has three holes per inch, and 2:1 has two holes per inch. Your wire spine pitch needs to match your punch machine pitch to be compatible.

Standard letter size 3:1 pitch wire binding spines have 32 loops, while 2:1 wires have 21. The margins on the page are slightly different, which is why you might notice the overall length is slightly different if you compare them side-by-side.

So which binding wire pitch is right for you?

1. Check your machine. If you already have a wire punch and bind machine, then you need to make sure the wire spines you buy are compatible.

2. If you don’t have a binding machine yet, then think about the thickness of the books that you plan to make. If you truly want the full range of sizes, then 2:1 is your safer bet, since we offer the special smaller 2:1 wires. Most customers who only bind thin books, however, do choose the 3:1 because they like the look of the holes being closer together.

How to Choose a Wire Size

Choosing a proper wire bind spine diameter for your document doesn't have to be a struggle. If your machine has a wire size selector, use that integrated tool as the first option. Typically there are slots cut into the machine that you slide your entire book into until you find the one that best fits your stack. Remember to allow the pages to be loose; you don't want them tight, or they won't turn easily once bound. It is always better to have a wire that is a little too big than too small. If your machine doesn't have this tool, we have a simple formula to help you select the best spine diameter below. And remember, you can always call us at (866)537-2244 for assistance.

Wire Binding FAQs

1. What kind of books are bound with wire? Wire is professional and clean, so is most often used in professional settings. Popular applications include (but are certainly not limited to) financial and business reports, presentations, notebooks, journals, marketing materials, proposals, wall and desk calendars, art pads, notepads, and more.

2. What do I need to bind with Wire-O? Wire binding is fairly simple, accomplished with just a few tools and accessories: a wire binding machine (in matching pitch to the wires; either 3:1 or 2:1), a wire closer (sometimes included on the binding machine), wire binding spines, and optional report covers.

3. What is wire bind pitch? The pitch refers to the ratio of holes per inch; so a 2:1 has two holes per inch, and a 3:1 has three. You will need to be sure your wire binding machine has the same hole pattern as the wire spines you get, because a 2:1 punch machine will only work with a 2:1 binding wire.

4. How many loops do 3:1 and 2:1 pitch wires have? When referring to the standard 11" cut wires, 2:1 wires feature 21 loops and 3:1 wires feature 32 loops.

5. How long are binding wires? Binding wires are either pre-cut to 11" lengths for standard letter size paper, or continuous and wrapped around a spool.

6. Can custom lengths be ordered? Yes! Binding101 offers custom-cut wires to order, just call (866)537-2244 for a quote. You can also cut them down yourself using standard wire cutters.
