When your project is all punched and ready to bind, binding with plastic coil can become very tedious. The Onyx HD4170 makes the job easier.

Slide your project into the Book Size Coil Selector on the top of the unit to see exactly what size coil you need.

Once you’ve begun inserting your coil on the end, turn on the machine and let the electronic roller do the rest. It guides the coil down the spine in seconds.

The oversize roller can handle the largest of sizes. Unique to the Rhin-O-tuff 4170, the twin rollers can be adjusted to different widths making binding with a variety of coil sizes much easier.

Finally, the Onyx HD HD4170comes with a pair of coil crimping pliers allowing you to finish off all your projects perfectly. Just be sure to keep the red dot facing up as you crimp on the ends of your project. The pliers cut the wire and bend the ends so that it doesn’t come apart. The HD HD4170also has a convenient storage slot for the pliers so they won’t get misplaced.

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR: 
The HD4170 coil inserter is the perfect electric inserting machine for high volumes of workloads, such as print shops and plants that need a heavy duty machine that can handle their demanding workloads. It would be a good choice for a production line where different employees will accomplish different jobs, because it only inserts the coil, so someone else could be punching on a different machine and someone else could be crimping the coils on another. If you are looking for a quality machine, but don’t need to run it all day long, then consider the Finish-@-Coil which is both a coil inserter and one-sided electric crimper, or if you need something even more heavy duty and with more features to run all day, then check out the Koilmatic, which is a fully automatic inserter and crimper.
 

WHAT I LIKE: 
My favorite part of the HD4170 inserter is the extra-large silicone top roller that offers significantly more stability and grip than other, smaller rollers. I find that this component makes inserting coils, even the large ones, easier and faster with less fumbles. The bottom roller is also adjustable, which means you can set the distance between the rollers, depending on the coil size and book thickness you are working with at the time.

The long, 3 year warranty is also a big plus to keep in mind when buying any machine... most machines in this class only carry and 1 year warranty, so you can see with that Rhin-O-Tuff really stands behind the quality of their machines by tripling that standard industry warranty.
 

It also has integrated features that make it more user friendly, including the coil diameter selector that makes choosing the best coil size for your book thickness easy, no matter your binding expertise, as well as a spine shaper that makes a smooth half circle for the ideal spine curve for the easiest coil inserting available. And from a completely aesthetic perspective, I love the black finish on the machine, which is a feature of all the ONYX units.
 

THINGS TO CONSIDER:  
The price of this electric inserting machine can definitely cause some sticker shock at first glance, especially when you see it side by side with other inserters that are significantly less expensive and don’t look too different on the surface. But you need to keep in mind that those cheaper machines are built for lower volumes and less frequent binding requirements, so when you invest in a Rhin-O-Tuff machine you get what you pay for: a quality unit that has been manufactured in the USA for high volumes, and with superior parts that are been built to last.
 

Sometimes people may be confused by the price and think that this is a punching machine as well, but it is not. The HD4170 is strictly a coil inserting machine, and will not punch the round holes for spiral binding. It also does not feature an electric crimper, so the finishing of the coil still needs to be done separately with an electric crimping machine like the Crimp-@-Coil.
 

THE BOTTOM LINE: 
The HD4170 is one of the highest quality heavy duty coil inserting machines on the market – it is made by Rhin-O-Tuff (Performance Design, LLC), who is known world-wide for their premium binding and finishing machines, all manufactured in the USA.
