This is how you assemble and operate the Rhin-O-Tuff Onyx HD7000 Heavy Duty Electric Punch. All the parts of assembly you'll need are in the chip tray; handles, all-in-one oil, a power cord, the foot pedal, and the reverse knob. Assembly begins with the handles. Insert one on each side, spinning them all the way in until they are locked shut. It is with these handles that you will lock and unlock the punch die. With the handles down in the unlocked position, slide the die straight in from the right-hand side. Then lift the handles up into the locked position. The machine plugs in from the backside, both for the power cord and the foot pedal. An additional option to the HD7000 is the palm switch. This would replace the foot pedal and allow you to control the punch from the top, either by finger, or by palm, as you're working with your paper. The adjustable knob on the front is the side margin stop. Now that you're all set up, let's watch the machine in action as we punch with a plastic comb die. Always begin with some test sheets to check for proper alignment. Slide the paper into the throat of the machine, all the way over to the left, and press down on the palm switch or the foot pedal. Fold the paper in half, aligned by it's corners, and see if all the holes line up. This will show you if the punch is centered and if the pins in the punching pattern need to be adjusted. To fix an uncentered punch, adjust the side margin stop, with this knob here, sliding it to the left or to the right to find the size paper you need, and lock it down. If you need to, adjusting the pins in the punching pattern is easy. Simply unlock both die lock levers and slide out the die, depress the pin carriage and remove the pin capture, pull out any pins that you need to remove, replace the pin capture, and replace the entire die back into the machine till the black part is flush and lock both sides. Let's make a second test punch to see how we're doing. This one looks perfect. Now you can now begin your job. Depending on the die being used, you can punch up to forty sheets of twenty pound paper at a time. The auto-reverse feature prevents paper jams as you are using your machine. However, if a paper jam does occur, turn the machine off in the back and remove the chip tray, revealing a small capped hole in the front. Remove the cap and place the reverse knob inside -- you will feel the threads fit right on. Turn the handle clockwise to reverse the teeth in the punch. You can tell whether you can remove the paper by a test pull, or by looking just to the left of the margin stop to see whether the teeth have retracted. When they are all gone, you'll know that the paper is free to be removed. That is how to use your Onyx HD7000 Heavy Duty Electric Punch.

Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX HD7000 Expert Review by Mallory Morsa

I RECOMMEND THIS FOR:
Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX HD7000 falls into the heavy duty punch category, and I find it fits in well there. For that reason, I recommend this machine for large offices, or medium print shops that need a workhorse of a machine that can handle heavy punching capacities for medium-volume workloads, and with the capability to run throughout the entire workday. That being said, there are more suitable tabletop punching machines for all-day punching, such as the Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX HD7700; but this HD7000 has proven itself as a great machine for mid-size print shops with a tighter budget and smaller workloads. Because it is a multi-functional binding punch (meaning it works for a variety of different binding methods, such as coil, wire, comb, and more) it is very versatile, only reinforcing the fact that it is a great choice for print shops, as it can help them meet the needs of customers of all kinds.

WHAT I LOVE:
The surface of machines is not nearly as important as the inner workings and power, however, when I first saw the new ONYX line of Rhin-O-Tuff® my first “ah ha” moment was the look of it. The sleek black metal look is clean, modern, looks high-quality, and fits in perfectly with other office equipment. Once I actually worked with the machine hands-on, I quickly fell in love with other features.

For one, it is extremely easy to change out the dies. The dies are the actual punching pattern blocks that can be changed out of the machine each time you want to switch the binding style. All you have to do is pull the two knobbed handles down to unlock the die, and slip it out of the machine. Then place the new die in, and push those handles up. It offers seamless change-over that is very fast. Plus the fact that you can change the dies is a huge perk to create a variety of bound books without having to buy different machines for each style, keeping the space needed for your binding station very compact.

In addition, each individual punching pin (1 pin for 1 hole) can be disengaged from every die, which allows for full customization of your punching pattern. This is helpful for doing oddly shaped items, as well as unique punching patterns (I love finding books with cool patterns, such as 3 holes punched, a 5-hole gap, and another 3 holes punched) and, again, helps you meet the demands of a large variety of customers.

It is also very quiet, especially considering the 40 sheet punching capacity. This is a unique feature of the new ONYX line and their proprietary “quietized dies” and you can experience the difference by watching our comparison video here.

Preventative maintenance of the HD7000 is also simple and performed quickly, by any user, as there is no special training or mechanical knowledge needed. First, be sure to empty the chip tray often before it overfills. An overfilled waste bin could cause paper jams in the machine. If the holes are beginning to be a bit rough, or if it is not punching as easily as before, then you can quickly sharpen the dies by punching a sheet of steel wool. In addition, the steel wool helps remove any built up paper dust on the pins. You can also purchase replacement pin sets without having to replace the entire die. In addition to these easy maintenance tasks, Rhin-O-Tuff® honors a 3 year long warranty that is unmatched by nearly any other manufacturer. These easy HD7000 tips can help keep the machine running smoothly for a long time.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
If you are looking into the “heavy duty binding punch” machines to begin with, then you already understand that they require a higher investment than the lower-volume office machines. Machines in this category can provide a little sticker shock at first glance, however, if you consider the quality and the durability of these machines, you understand the additional investment requirement.

In addition to a higher cost than other tabletop machines, you should know that the ONYX HD7000 (as well as the entire line of ONYX punches) are strictly punching machines, meaning they do not have the binding capability included. They being said, however, you can easily pair the machine with any of the Rhin-O-Tuff® binding modules, including the HD4170 Electric Coil Inserter, the HD8000 Wire Closer, and the HD4470 Plastic Comb Opener. All of those modules can be used next to the machine by another operator to speed up the entire process, or mounted onto the top of the machine for an all-in-one binding solution.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
The Rhin-O-Tuff® ONYX HD7000 heavy duty punch machine is a great option for small to medium sized print and copy shops that need to produce a variety of bound books for their customers, need quick change-over between jobs, and need an easy-to-operate quality binding machine. On top of all that, the sleek black metal look adds a touch of class and will look great in any environment, impressing both customers and staff.
