WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:
The first major benefit of the Crimp-@-Coil that I love is the fact that it electrically cuts and crimps-in BOTH sides of your coils at the same time. This is a major time saver, and will alleviate the strain and pain associated with hand-crimping using pliers; your users won’t suffer from cramps or even more serious medical issues that can come as a result of using hand crimpers for large volume workloads.
There are a lot of adjustment opportunities with the Crimp-A-Coil, which really opens up the possibilities for the sizes of books you can accomplish. There is a sheet size setting, but moving the paper tray guides. There is a grid you can use to set the trays independently, or you can just place your book on there and move the trays to form to the document itself. Spin the knobs to tighten them in-place. These trays let you align for books from 6” to 17” long, so nearly any size you need to finish, you can do with the Crimp-a-Coil. The crimping heads are also mobile, so you can set them to the width of your book. Just unlock the three handles in the back, glide each head to the appropriate location (again, using the printed guide ruler for accuracy), and then lock them back into place. There is also a coil diameter setting, which lifts and lowers the crimping devices themselves. You control that by spinning the large knobs on the sides of the machine, using the guide printed just inside the opening. These are also controlled independently, so you need to adjust both sides. And you should also set the coil holder, by using the lever and knobs on the crimping devices themselves.
The machine is also very fast, handling as many as about 54 cycles per minute; most users can’t keep up with the machine capabilities, so keep in mind that this is dependent on your individual operators. It comes with the standard Akiles one year warranty against defects, and handles the full range of coil diameters from tiny 6mm up to huge 50mm spirals.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Remember that this is a high volume crimping machine, and so the time that it takes to adjust the settings is a bit more than smaller units; this means it is not ideal for doing tiny runs of various coil sizes, such as five 6mm and five 30mm books, as it does take a few minutes to setup. But, that being said, if you do primarily one size book, then just leave the settings there and it is ready-to-go at all times for as few or as many documents as you need.
You will also want to keep in mind that this is a finishing system only, which means it will not punch your holes or insert your coils; it is a coil crimping machine meant for higher volume users.
